About me
I have practised art in many areas including painting, ceramics and illustrations.
I grew up Hobart in Tasmania (Lutruwita). In the last few years I have walked through many of the island’s forests which prompted a focus on trees. I also began to notice neglected suburban trees in the Western suburbs of Melbourne where I now live, and have drawn inspiration from them.
In my recent paintings I have honoured tall trees using the stylised, intertwined limbs and techniques of late Renaissance and Baroque eras, usually associated with church decoration. I enjoy using and, occasionally, distorting their use of drama, light and dark (known as chiaroscuro), perspective and glazing to build up colour. I am suggesting that the sublime as well as life, death and regeneration can be experienced in the forest and, if you look up, along suburban roadsides.
